Meet Bernie the Black Sheep

Bernie the Black Sheep is a very special sheep. While it is not uncommon for black lambs to be born in a white flock, both parents must carry the colour gene.

The lambs of some breeds are born black and stay black, like Bernie. Other lambs are born black, but eventually grow white wool, or lighten to a soft silver grey and grow a fleece of hair and wool.

In some cultures, black sheep are prized because they help shepherds to count their flocks quickly and easily. Usually, one black sheep accompanies 100 white sheep in flock of over 1,000.
