Penny the Platypus

Meet Penny the Platypus

Penny the platypus is a mysterious creature. If you placed a real platypus under an Ultraviolet light, it glows biofluorescent blue-green.

Platypuses, sometimes called duck-billed platypus, are semiaquatic mammals. Instead of giving birth to live young, platypuses lay eggs.

Endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania, and like other monotremes, platypuses sense their prey through electrolocation. They are one of the few species of venomous mammals. Male platypuses have spurs on the hind feet that deliver a strong venom, capable of causing severe pain to animals and humans.

Although quite solitary and territorial, a group of platypuses is called a ‘paddle’.
