Meet Maria the Masked Owl

Maria is an Australian Masked Owl. She lives in Australian forests, with lots of shrubbery, and in Southern New Guinea. Maria is territorial, roosts in hollow trees, and sometimes in caves. Maria hunts at night for rodents, bats, birds, reptiles, insects, rabbits, and bandicoots.

Maria comes from Tasmania, which means she is larger than mainland Masked Owls. Masked Owls are the second largest of Australia’s nocturnal (night) birds.

Masked Owls have three types of beautiful plumage: pale, intermediate, and dark. They have chestnut to white faces, edged with a dark ring, which is darker around the beak and large eyes.
