Tommy the Tasmanian Tiger

Meet Tommy the Tasmanian Tiger

Tommy the Tasmanian Tiger is shy and known for the ‘tiger’ stripes on his back. Thought to be extinct, people say they have seen Tasmanian Tigers in Tasmania’s wild Western regions; and heard their strange whining bark.

Don’t tell Tommy, but he is not a tiger. He is a Thylacine. Thylacines have puppies that grow up in a pouch, like a Kangaroo’s Joey. His closest relative is the Quoll.

Thylacines were unique to Tasmania. It is thought they evolved – like many strange marsupials – because Australia and the island of Tasmania were cut off from the world millions of years ago.
