Meet Kevin the Koala

Kevin the Koala’s ancestors were mysterious creatures. Scientist surmise that Koalas, or at least Koala-like marsupials, evolved on the continent of Australia when it began to drift northward, very slowly, as it separated from the Antarctic 45 million years ago. Archaeologists discovered fossilised remains, similar to modern-day Koalas, that are 25 million years old.

As Australia’s climate became more temperate, some vegetation evolved to become Eucalyptus forests. Eucalyptus leaves, as we know, are a favourite food of Kevin Koala.

Like all Australian animals, Koalas are important in Aboriginal culture. Koalas have featured in their myths and legends for 60,000 years.
