Meet Billy the Bilby

Billy the Bilby’s relatives have inhabited Australia for around 15 million years. With long pinkish-coloured ears, Bilbies are recognised as Australia’s Easter Bunny.

Bilbies are amazing engineers. They move up to 1.5 tonnes of soil per year while they construct their spiral burrows. They dig new burrows every few weeks.

Bilbies prefer grassy areas so that they can move around easily without being detected by predators.

Nocturnal marsupials, they leave their burrows at night to forage for food such as bulbs, spiders, termites, and grass seeds. Bilbies do not need to drink water as they retain moisture from their food.
